Picture of author, Major Joseph I. Lambert, of the book, One Hundred Years with the Second Cavalry©, 1999One Hundred Years with the Second Cavalry©, reprinted in 1999
by Major Joseph I. Lambert.

This book was first published in 1939 as a result of Major Lambert's commanding officer at Fort Riley, Kansas, commissioning him to write the centenary history of the Second Cavalry regiment through the year 1936. The regiment was initially organized in 1836 as the Second Dragoons. This 441 page reprinting is highly prized by military historians and by members of the Second Cavalry today. In the preface of the original publication in 1939 Major Lambert wrote,

"This history of the Second Cavalry is intended to portray faithfully and accurately the events of importance and of interest which have befallen the different troops and the regiment as a whole, over a period of one hundred years... . Here it is intended to subordinate individuals and incidents in order to tell the story of the organization."

This book satisfies and thrills the reader as it recounts the rich history of the regiment, and unfurls poems of the cavalry, honors and decorations received, battles fought, officers assigned to it, non-commissioned officers of the first three grades who served the regiment, enlisted men who retired from the regiment, former enlisted men of the regiment who became officers during the World War, and finally an excellent index of photographs and drawings of the regiment life.

The picture above is of the author astride his horse, Copia, in 1934. The book's cover is a deep "Horse Cavalry" blue, with the title embossed in gold leaf on the front and spine. The cover is not shown here because we were not successful in scanning it and having it readable.
