The narrator, Donovan, happens to have Down syndrome, but that only makes the story more unique. An extra chromosome may have challenged his development, but it did not spoil his adventure in Donovan and the Big Hole.

Teachers and parents will find some story references have exciting portions of Texas history. Young people will understand better the capabilities of people with disabilities and realize that we are, after all, more alike than different.
