AUTHOR VISITS TO SCHOOLS
Schools know Nancy Lambert Davenport, author of Donovan and the Big Hole, for her upbeat informative and educational author visits. She is happy to visit any school within about a 100 mile radius of downtown Dallas. Please contact her at nancdave@swbell.net to set up a date.
The author visits are free. In return, she asks that you be pro-active in giving students a great learning experience by introducing them to her book ahead of time, and by emphasizing to parents the value of owning a book and opportunity to purchase personal copies of Donovan and the Big Hole for their students. She will give you advance material to help with this.
When you invite her to your school to talk to students about her book, she takes her charge seriously but at the same time will make it fun for the students. In addition to telling about Donovan and the Big Hole and depending on the age of the group, she will address:
- The research process of her subject (gather information, record it, organize and write about it)
- The creation of the story (building a plot, developing fictional characters, presenting a setting, and having a clear beginning, middle and end)
- The actual writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing)
- Various terms such as foreshadowing, plot, theme, and main ideas as well as “person” since she wrote the book in the first person
- Living with disabilities since the narrator of the story has Down syndrome
Nancy Lambert Davenport will teach a thorough lesson on the writing process, using her own book as an example, without the students realizing they are being taught a lesson. This is important since these are all subjects listed on the Essential Knowledge and Skills of English language Arts and Reading for elementary schools in Texas with the exception of the topic of disabilities.
