ABOUT NANCY
Nancy Lambert Davenport grew up in San Antonio, Texas where her father retired from a thirty year career as an officer in the U.S. Army. She grew up listening to his stories of Army life and hearing him relate what he learned from his reading and study of U.S. military history, especially the horse Cavalry. Nancy’s love of the history of military life began there. Her mother contributed to Nancy’s love of history with her own hobby of collecting historical books by officers’ wives who wrote about their adventures.
After graduating from the University of Texas in Austin with a double major in History and English, Nancy married her high school sweetheart, Dick. She taught high school English and History for several years before they began their family. Richard and Elizabeth were born in two different cities as a result of transfers required by Dick’s work.
When their third child, Austin, was born with Down syndrome in 1978 their life and depth of faith changed dramatically. Since little was known about the education and care of children with Down syndrome at that time, Nancy and Dick rolled up their sleeves and found the best research available on raising a child with needs that were different from the average child.
Nancy wrote a weekly newspaper column for ten years—over 500 columns-- on parenting in The Richardson News, a newspaper from that suburb of Dallas. The family joke was that everyone cut and ran when Nancy was looking for a subject for her weekly writing.
Austin is now happily married to Christi, and they live in Dallas TX. Their success and independence are a testament to the acceptance and love they experienced from their families and in their communities growing up.
Nancy and Dick are now retired. They enjoy serving guests at their bed and breakfast when they are not spending time with their children and grandchildren and at their church they love.
Donovan and the Big Hole is Nancy’s first work of fiction.
